Preparing a hosting handover for a development team

development

A hosting handover should give the incoming team the access and operational context needed to maintain the site without sharing one unrestricted account unnecessarily.

01 What you need before you begin

Identify the service owner, outgoing and incoming maintainers, and the systems involved. Agree who will own billing, domain renewal and production approval after the handover.

02 Prepare a hosting handover for a development team

  1. Inventory hosting, domain, DNS, repository, email, database, deployment and monitoring access. Separate account ownership from day-to-day technical permissions.

  2. Create individual or team access through the supported platform roles. Transfer necessary credentials through an approved secret manager rather than ordinary email.

  3. Provide the current deployment and recovery procedure, runtime requirements and safe support contacts. Include the active release and backup locations.

  4. Have the incoming team perform a controlled staging deployment and locate a restorable backup. Resolve missing access while the outgoing team is still available.

  5. Remove obsolete access and rotate shared credentials as appropriate after the handover is verified. Update recovery email addresses and ownership records.

03 Confirm the expected result

Confirm the new team can maintain the intended service and the owner retains account recovery and renewal control. Verify retired credentials no longer grant access.

04 Troubleshoot unexpected results

If an integration belongs to an individual’s personal account, plan a supported transfer or replacement. Changing a hosting password alone may not revoke repository or API access.

05 A common question

Should the developer own the domain registration account?

Keep ownership and operational roles deliberate. The business should retain dependable control of its domain and renewal arrangements while granting the developer the access required for their work.

06 Example: create a handover record the next team can use

Prepare a concise operational record that explains how the website is actually run. Keep credentials in approved secret storage and reference their location rather than putting passwords into the handover document.

Area What the incoming team should know
Ownership Who controls domain renewal, hosting billing and production approval
Deployment Repository, release procedure, runtime and destination
Recovery Backup location, restore procedure and latest test
Operations Monitoring, scheduled jobs, email route and support contacts

Ask the incoming team to perform a safe staging change and find the relevant backup. This reveals missing access while the outgoing team is still available.

How can our team help?

Contact us with the hosting service and the access or configuration question. Keep the business owner involved when account authority changes. We can help with the services we provide, but repository ownership, third-party licences and external workspace administration may need separate actions. Record those responsibilities so that a complete hosting login is not mistaken for a complete handover.
